Welcome to episode 326 of Sexology Podcast! Today I am delighted to be speaking with Dr. Shemeka Thorpe. In this episode, we discuss sexual self-consciousness, incorporating your spirituality into your sex life and recommendations to improve your sexual confidence.

Dr. Shemeka Thorpe is an alum of Florida State and UNCG, a North Carolina native, and a proud Ravenclaw with first-generation college student status.

A lover of the beach who also loves to read books, her passion for research began during her undergraduate studies. Earning her PhD in Community Health Education has enabled this public health professional’s goal facilitating positive sexology narratives about Black people rather than deficit-based ones; she strives to create representative teams that consider community needs when disseminating important information from academic journals into meaningful impacts on population health outcomes.

With over 10 years of research under her belt, she is a wheelhouse of knowledge when it comes to sexuality education. As someone deeply embedded in the community and highly active on social media, not only has she been able gather insights from conversations with Black women – but all these experiences also inform her ongoing studies.

Furthermore, this expertise also sees her playing an important role by sitting on editorial review boards for two well-respected journals dedicated to comprehensive sexology counsels and sexual wellness as a whole.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What sexual self-consciousness means
  • Recommendations to improve your sexual confidence
  • Overcoming the shame spiral that can happen around sex
